Summary Report by Jan Modin, FICPI Vice President:
Recently, a symposium was held in Beijing, at the Kempinski Hotel, 19-21 September 2007. It was organised by FICPI and its Chinese Section. This section was established last year, and the object of the symposium was to consolidate FICPI´s involvement in China and to increase the mutual understanding between Chinese professionals and practitioners from other parts of the world.
There were a good number of participants, in total about 250 delegates, almost half of them from China. Some 40 examiners from the Chinese Patent Office (SIPO) took part, and many ideas and views on IP were exchanged.
Numerous presentations were made, with parallel Power Point slides in English and in Chinese and simultaneous interpretation from English to Chinese, and vice versa. The English versions of these presentations are now available on this website, see the appended list of files.
The first day was devoted to patent claim drafting and enforcement in Europe, the US and in China. A running example was used to illustrate various legal and practical points, namely the LEGO toy building elements. See the following documents:

Thanks to a diligent and well-planned work by the local FICPI Secretariat, the symposium evolved successfully in a framework of pleasant social activities. Certainly, the mutual understanding was facilitated, and the attendees left with an increased appetite to learn more about IP in the various jurisdictions.
